It was in 1992 that the two high mountain guides, Bruno Gardent and Bernard Lambolez, passed the Mer de Glace cave on their way back from the Drus. Convinced that making a museum dug in the ice would be a great innovation, they persuaded a local bank to lend them the necessary funds to build the first cave.
The latter, nicknamed the "memory of time" by paleo-climatologists, is constantly revealing our climatic history to us on a daily basis. A true natural treasure, the deeper you go into the glacier, the older the ice is.
The Grotto of the Mer de Glace reveals the secrets of the life of the mountain people at the beginning of the 19th century and dazzles young and old alike. Retailed every year, its different exhibitions surprise, impress and above all amaze us. Welcoming more than 400,000 visitors a year, the Ice Grotto is undeniably one of the most famous activities to do during your stay at Montenvers.
Access
The cave is accessible either by a footpath, about 20 minutes walk, or by cable car. More than 400 steps separate the arrival of the gondola from the cave entrance.
