Built in 1880 to shelter the mountaineers who climbed the peaks of Chamonix, this rustic high mountain refuge has recently been modernised by the Maisons et Hôtels Sibuet. Today, the hotel has been renamed Terminal Neige, and the "glamping" doesn't even begin to cover it. The rooms have wooden fireplaces, feather beds and leather travel trunks that serve as bedside tables. And Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain, is practically next door. But it's not just night-time climbers who climb the mountainside - in a red wagon, no less - to the lobby terrace, 6,725 feet above sea level. Day hikers can also be seen drinking an aperitif on the terrace and enjoying regional specialities in cast-iron casseroles at the Montenvers restaurant. If you choose the right moment, you can watch the dazzling sunset light show on the 7.5 kilometre-long Mer de Glace, a "sea of ice", just below the hotel.
