Refuge du Montenvers

Take the mythical little red cogwheel train from Chamonix, or go there on foot for the more adventurous... The Terminal Neige Refuge experience starts here, with an exceptional 30 minutes in the middle of the forest, with breathtaking views, to finally discover the legendary Mer de Glace. The old refuge, renovated by the Sibuet family in collaboration with the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc, never ceases to seduce us.

Spirit of refuge

Built in 1880, the Grand Hôtel du Montenvers has a sober facade made of rough granite and pierced with small windows. Mountaineers from the four corners of the world, who had come to marvel at the legendary glacier, were already stopping here. By preserving its charm, the Sibuet family has been able to pay homage to the historical values of the site by creating a place of sharing, conviviality and a return to the roots. The refuge offers to rediscover the charm of yesteryear with about twenty rooms, family suites and a dormitory in a warm atmosphere: parquet flooring, old woodwork on the walls, cosy beds, mountain woollen fabrics and soft lighting... The old wooden fireplaces have been transformed into bookcases, the bedside lamps have been replaced by miner's lamps and the old leather trunks serve as bedside tables. To preserve the spirit of refuge, a spacious dormitory sleeps ten, with bunk beds and built-in capsule beds for a real mountain atmosphere. The layout integrates furniture for practicality and intimacy, without ever losing sight of aesthetics with light woodwork and modern lines. Whether you sleep on one side or the other of the building, all the rooms offer a view of the Mer de Glace, the aiguilles des Drus or the Grandes Jorasses.

High Mountain Experience

To continue the experience, two restaurants and a coffee shop are available on the site. The Panoramic Mer de Glace, a bistro with a view where you can taste traditional alpine dishes: potée savoyarde, grandmother's chicken and péla des Aravis that you can enjoy comfortably inside or on the terrace. The atmosphere is both modern and authentic, with the charm of a dairy revisited in an industrial spirit. In the heart of the refuge, the Montenvers restaurant offers tasty and copious mountain cuisine based on local produce.

Around the hotel, nice walks are to be made. A visit to the ice cave is a trip to the heart of the glacier and is not to be missed. It has been redesigned every year for the last fifty years and is accessible by footpath or by cable car (then there are almost 500 steps to go down because the glacier is getting smaller every year...). For walkers, opt for a Montenvers-plan de l'Aiguille hike, with a high mountain guide to discover all the secrets of the high summits.
