Filled with passengers, the scarlet cogwheel train climbs briskly. End of the line, 1913m. Montenvers carved in stone. Outside, set between the mythical Grandes Jorasses and the Drus, the famous Mer de Glace. The glacier that runs towards Chamonix owes its name to the two British who exploited it in 1741.
The first dry stone refuge, built in 1779, was followed by a permanent building, Le Temple de la Nature, which became the Grand Hôtel du Montenvers in 1880. Recently, the austere granite facade has been home to a dashing Refuge du Montenvers. The last address of the Sibuet Hotels & Houses owes the rigour of its renovation to its son. The result? A rather masculine universe in the soberly elegant rooms. As a group of friends, a dormitory, just like the old one, is installed under the roofs: original beams, blond wood for ten built-in beds, sometimes bunk beds. Grey curtains preserve the intimacy, but for the shower it is on the landing - brightened up with a street art style fresco - to be shared. No television, but games by the fireplace. A table d'hôtes with local dishes and a welcome like at old friends' homes.
